Lying to the north west of Tokoriki are the four Islands known as the Sacred Islands. Fijian legend says that these islands were the first land fall of the early settlers 2,500 years ago—indeed hidden beneath a huge volcanic outcrop on Navadra Island is a shrine to the gods of the Islands, where you can leave an offering.
Today, their geographical remoteness and beauty make the Sacred Islands a favourite location for exploring, while their stunning white sandy beaches are just the ticket for relaxing and sunbathing.
All four islands are uninhabited, although it is common to see local fishing boats and luxury yachts moored in the sandy passages between the islands. On occasion the islands are used for filming commercials and television programs.
The Sacred Islands are home to wild goats, flying foxes and, seasonally large populations of sea birds, including brown boobies, crested and white terns and common noddys. Nesting in burrows on the island are shearwaters, although they are normally more evident at night. You may also see Pacific harriers—large birds of prey which hunt the flying foxes.
If you are interested in the local flora your guide will happily take you on a bush walk.
At high tide there is good snorkeling from the beaches and in the sheltered bays, and in calm conditions a stop at Dunk’s Canyon Reef is well worth it.
